Chrysler to drop $500 million on Toledo plant

By Cornelius Nunev

The Chrysler Group has announced plans for a significant investment in its Jeep production plant in Toledo, Ohio. Automotive News reports that the car maker will direct $500 million toward the improvement of the Toledo North Assembly Complex, where Jeep and other automobiles are built. The cash will be used for facilities expansion and for hiring additional workforce.

Toledo to expect more workers

Only one shift of employees could be in the Chrysler Toledo North facility at a time as part of the Toledo Assembly Complex. Chrysler had to hire 1,105 more hourly and salaried jobs to be able to increase manufacturing to create the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro SUV, as reported by Fox Toledo Online.

The brand new employees will need extra room at the Toledo North Assembly Complex. That means 300,000 square feet are going to be added on. Before 2012 is up, there will be changes to the on-campus body shop quality lab, paint shop and material handling companies. The new shift for manufacturing will start after that. By the end of 2013, it should all be complete.

Getting closer to 2013

Chrysler anticipates that the Toledo North growth will be ready just in time for production of the 2013 Jeep Liberty SUV. DaimlerChrysler released the current Liberty in 2008. It was intended to have Jeep Cherokee in it just a little bit. After 17 years, Cherokee ended manufacturing in 2001.

Automotive News reports that the Fiat platform will be used for the first time by Chrysler in the brand new Liberty. The platform, which is called CUSW, will serve as a framework for up to eight future compact and mid-sized designs in North America.

In 2006, the Dodge Nitro SUV came out. It was intended to be a version of the Liberty that had been changed.

Chrysler spending a ton

Nationwide, Chrysler has committed $1.7 billion to retooling several facilities following the recently negotiated United Auto Workers contract. The $500 million Toledo growth will be the first of several projects.
