Smoke Photography: An Overview

By James Harden

Choosing Smoke Photography

Smoke, otherwise an unwanted by-product of combustion, is actually a great subject for photography, even though it may not seem like it at first because the the subject is contantly changing! Still, this is where the fun comes in. The challenge of capturing smoke in the shape you're interested in using is what makes smoke photography a game of skill.

When the subject of your photography is not under your control, you must rise to the challenge of capturing just what you're going after. Still, it is this challenge that has increased my creativity and propelled my photography forward. Finding the pattern that you are trying to capture is what makes smoke photography an intriguing challenge!

Limitations found in smoke photography come only from the barriers we find in our own limited perspective when it comes to photography. When you begin to see the world from the perspective of smoke photography, possibilities truly become limitless. While your mind is the coordinator or creator of the scene, it is the combination of two different shots that really form the subject of smoke photography.

Creating Smoke Photography

For smoke photography, you definitely first need a picture of the smoke. Depending on the shape and form of the smoke, you'll want to find an object that would fit the shape and form of the smoke. Essentially, you're looking for a shape or form from the smoke that will fit a picture of another object that you will take.

There are many different approaches to finding your two photos that you will combine. Some photographers like to first have the object or shape in mind that they will use and then spend hours with smoke in order to capture the form they need. Others take a more creative approach in which they allow the smoke form to speak to them and be the inspiration for the object that they will later find. The choice is really yours.

From a small box setup to a studio setup, there are so many ways to capture the object you are looking for, so you can feel free to select whatever fits your style. Once you have both your smoke and object shot, now merge these two pictures in Photoshop or some other software editing program. While this may be the most time-consuming part of the process, you'll find it is the most rewarding!

Smoke Photography: Other Options

Once you've discovered how exciting smoke photography is, you'll find yourself wondering what else you can do with smoke photography. You'll find that the answer to this question is only limited by the options available to your own ideas! But, as you focus on options available, you'll soon find that a world of options open themselves to you.

You might even want to start carrying around a small notepad so that you can write down new ideas as they surface! When you begin imaging the entire world in view of smoke, you know you're on the right track. Then, when you feel you are all out of ideas, you can return to smoke itself and watch as the possibilities unfold.
