Grants Are Supporting The Long Island Development Process

By Jeff Freeman

For those of you who have grown up on Long Island, New York then you are aware of the many shopping malls and commercial real estate that is being used up. We are running out of space to construct new buildings, population is growing, and due to all of this it creates major traffic congestion. Listen I understand these projects are beneficial to Long Island development but we need to make sure the infrastructure can support the increase in traffic. In order to create space we have no choice but to tear down old unused spaces which improves the image of the surrounding area.

In order to renovate the view of Long Island in a declining economic environment it is necessary that we keep replacing unused space with something that will add value to the community. Continuing to allow new construction projects like these to take will only help us. One of these projects will be finishing up by fall of this year and it will be a brand new shopping center located on the 22 acres of land earlier owned by Avis Rental Cars as their corporate headquarters. Equity One is a Miami-based developer who chose to take on the important task of building a new shopping plaza for Long Islanders. The new plaza will be known for popular retail stores such as Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdales, Saks Off Fifth Avenue and you will be able to eat a tasty grilled burger at Shake Shack in between your day of shopping.

If you thought there was already enough traffic in this part of the Island then you got another thing coming this fall. When the new shopping center opens off of Old Country Road in Carle Place it will make traffic problems even worse than before. Will it increase business for the surrounding stores though? There is no doubt that it will create jobs in the surrounding area which is a plus. At the expense of the local citizens when it comes to traveling around and running errands it will increase the image of the area positively. I am hoping that this project opens up the door for more development across Long Island because the economy needs to improve so we give the younger generation a reason to stick around. It may be a good time to find alternative routes than Old Country Road to avoid wasting time being stuck in the increase in traffic. Due to the new jobs that will be created and the effect on surrounding businesses I believe that this new shopping plaza will start a positive development trend for the rest of Long Island.

There are many ways to get involved in your community and make a change for the better. By supporting the neighborhood in a variety of ways will not be wasted. Create awareness about the problems citizens on Long Island are facing to improve them and build a better future.

We can guess all we want about how brand new retail marketplaces will impact the local Long Island economy; sometimes things do not end up how we planned though. The Source Mall has had its good years and now stores are trying to move elsewhere. It could not be at such an opportune time with the new plaza opening up further down Old Country Road. The much anticipated completion will hopefully bring in a lot more business and tax revenue for Long Island. As for the Source Mall, what will that turn into after all the stores migrate elsewhere? Progress is better than no progress at all but we need to do more than just build shopping centers.
