Life of Pi - Book Review

By Will Turner

Life of Pi, written by the Canadian author Yann Martel and first published in 2001 is a Man Booker Prize winning novel along with being a winner of the Asian American Prize for Literature. It tells the story of a young boy named Pi who spends 227 days out on sea on a small raft with a group of animals after their ship sinks and is a tale of his journey towards survival.

The Life of Pi is the story of Piscine "Pi" Molitor Patel, a young boy who lives in Pondicherry, India where his father owns a zoo and is a follower of three religions, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Due to the political unrest in India at that time, the Patel family decides to shut down the zoo and move to Canada.

However, a few days into the journey, disaster strikes and the entire ship sinks including all members on board along with the animals. The only survivors are Pi, an injured zebra, a hungry hyena, an orangutan and a tiger named Richard Parker who find themselves stranded on a small lifeboat.

Both the injured zebra and the orangutan are soon killed and eaten by the hyena. The tiger in turn kills and eat the hyena leaving just the two of them alone on the boat now. In an effort to avoid being eaten by Richard Parker, Pi portrays himself as the alpha male of the group and remains safe from harm. Since he does not want the tiger to die for fear of going mad by being alone on the boat, he fishes and feeds the two of them in order to stay alive.

Life of Pi then enters its third phase when their lifeboat washes up on the shores of Mexico and the tiger escapes into a nearby forest leaving Pi alone. After the authorities refuse to believe Pi's story, he modifies his tale by replacing the animals with his mother, a murderous cook and a sailor and asks the authorities which one they prefer.

However, the authorities prefer listening to the first story even though they do not believe in it, leaving Pi to end with a remark saying that it is the same way with God - those who do not believe in him miss out on something in life!

A must read book, Life of Pi is for all those book lovers who like a story that takes its time to build up. Although available at all leading shops, it is much better to purchase it online where one can get a great discount on it.
