A Departmental Wedding Engagement

By Brent Neenan

When you're working in a warehouse every day of your life barely ever seeing the light of day; the last thing on your mind is wedding engagements, or at least the last thing on my mind. I'm too busy sweeping up floors and filling out orders and making deliveries to worry about anything in relation to marriage. But love was in the air for two union employees that I worked side by side with. I didn't think so at the time but Tom was actually poised to get married- to Lenoir! As shocking as it was; Bill told me the story one day during lunch.

We were up in the cafeteria eating lunch together as we always did. Bill was a good thirty or forty years older than me nearing retirement and like a yenta enjoyed talking about nothing else except the other people around the department. He saw himself as the smartest guy in the room even though his career amounted to nothing more than professional stock-boy and could go off for the entire lunch hour about how dumb everyone else was. I was still new to the team and befriended Bill out of a mutual appreciation for literature but soon came to realize how blacklisted he was by the others.

That day was different though. He wasn't spitting his noodles out of his mouth talking about everyone else. Instead he had something good to say for once. More often than not he would talk about his evil wife or how Liz was sleeping her way to the top of the department. Our conversations always meandered to how he always got the short end of the stick but on that day I saw a relatively different side of Bill.

I was shocked that Tom did it in front of everyone at the warehouse. It happened on the first day I had to miss work and now I wish I would've been there. After lunch Tom brought everyone together for the big news. Bill made the comment that he thought Tom had a couple during lunch for the extra confidence but that was just Bill being Bill. He got down on one knee and clumsily muttered out the words "will you marry me?" Bill made it sound like Tom was a drunk but it seemed sweet to me. I was happy for them.

Bill was indeed happy for them but he told me in the most; snide way imaginable. He then began comparing his wedding engagement devised by yourengagement101 with Tom's and how his was way more thoughtful. To this day I don't know why I ate lunch with him for so long.
