The Truth behind Tungsten Rings

The company that makes Tungsten carbide Ring has some serious explaining to do. Tungsten is supposed to be one of the hardest metals that we are able to use today. That means that these rings, which are made from this tungsten carbon compound, shouldn't be able to break like I see them do on YouTube all the time. So what is up?

To make the tungsten rings themselves requires someone with a lot of knowledge in chemistry. The end result of the combination of two equal parts of carbon and tungsten is a fine gray powder that can be pressed and formed into shapes for use in industrial machinery, tools, as well as jewelry. This compound, when pressed makes a metal that is approximately three times stiffer than steel, and is much denser than steel or titanium.

In its most basic form, tungsten carbide, also called simply carbide by chemists, is a fine gray powder, but it can be pressed and formed into shapes for use in industrial machinery, tools, as well as jewelry. This is how tungsten carbide rings are made and where the claims of "indestructibility" came from. Pretty cool right? However, even though the metal that is formed by this process is supposed to be indestructible, the rings themselves aren't.

I really can't answer the first question since I'm not a chemist and I don't work with the company that makes these rings. But if you think I'm lying about how breakable these rings are I would go to YouTube and search for the Tungsten test. You'll find all of the proof you need from that one simple search. However, for the I can I do know that if the ring was as strong as it claimed that it wouldn't be a good thing at all.

Personally, I have no idea. If I had to guess I would say that the company that makes tungsten carbide ring are either false advertising their product and are using a weaker metal and claiming that the metal was tungsten, or they are not make the rings to the proper tungsten to carbon ratio. Either way, I wouldn't buy tungsten rings and neither should you.
