A Hypoglycemia Diet Keeps Insulin Levels Balanced

By Joseph Yuranovich

People who suffer from low blood sugar should consider adopting a hypoglycemia diet which can stabilize their insulin production. People who eat simple carbohydrates, such as white rice, or white bread, and feel dizzy afterward, could be experiencing insulin spikes. When insulin spikes, glucose levels dramatically drop, leaving the person feeling groggy and dizzy. A diet, free of simple carbohydrates, can help a person avoid the insulin peaks and help keep one's insulin production balanced.

Avoid soft drinks that are loaded with sugar and are easily absorbed by the blood system. Avoid refined foods, especially foods that list sugar as the number one ingredient. Simple carbohydrates break down into glucose and are quickly digested and sent into the blood stream. The body's response is to produce insulin to break down and absorb the glucose, resulting in an insulin spike.

Some people eat a bowl of corn flakes in the morning, believing that a bowl of corn flakes is a good breakfast choice. But, corn flakes break down into glucose rapidly, causing an insulin spike. The better choice is a bowl of oatmeal, which is a complex carbohydrate which takes longer to break down and digest. Complex carbohydrates help balance insulin production compared to simple carbohydrates that are quickly broken down and absorbed.

Foods that keep glucose levels balanced include fish, chicken, and red meats. These foods help to keep glucose levels, and insulin levels at safe levels. Eggs help keep insulin levels stable, and if one is concerned about cholesterol, one can eat egg whites.

An egg white omelet with a bowl of oatmeal in the morning will keep one satisfied until lunchtime. If one gets hungry before lunch, an apple around mid morning is a healthy alternative than a candy bar from the vending machine. Some say to eat any type of fruit, while others say to limit tropical fruits such as bananas.

Not all fruits are created equal, and some people say that it is best to limit banana intake because bananas are rapidly broken down into glucose. Fruits that take longer to break down and absorb include papaya, apples, and pears, and thereby help keep insulin levels balanced.

People who have to eat a meal plan of complex carbohydrates might think that they have to avoid desserts. But, this is not the case. But, one has to consider his dessert choices carefully and forgo the slice of chocolate cake. The person can feast on apples covered in peanut butter though because these foods take time to break down and therefore there is no insulin spike.

There are people who have to take a proactive approach to their meal plan and have to follow a hypoglycemia diet. There are those who suffer from high insulin production, especially after they eat simple carbohydrates, and need to be food conscious. There are many good foods one can eat that help balance out one's insulin production, for instance, high protein foods such as poultry, red meat and fish. A great way to start the day is to enjoy a bowl of hot oatmeal with a tasty egg white omelet, along with a slice of wheat toast.
