What Are The Best Flea Treatment Methods?

By Brandon Jones

When it comes to the best flea treatment methods there are a number of things that you have to take in to account. You have to think about how to best treat your pet for fleas but you also have to treat the environment in which they live in order to get rid of the fleas for good.

Treating the Environment for Fleas

One of the most important parts of flea treatment is treating the environment your pet lives in. That's because when the female fleas lay their eggs on your pet they are going to fall off, and land wherever the pet is. Whether that is on the carpet, their bedding, or the garden.

Whilst in the environment the fleas will use bits of sustenance that they find there in order to grow. So after the eggs hatch they come out as larvae. They grow in that stage for a certain amount of time and then pupate. Finally they come out as adult fleas, ready to jump on to your pet.

This means that you should wash everything that you can, such as the pet's bedding, at high temperatures. That should get rid of all the growing fleas there. Anything you can't wash you should either wipe with a cloth if it's a hard surface or else vacuum if it is not.

Just relying on vacuuming though will not be effective. The reason for that is that flea larvae are so tiny they're able to cling to the strands of a carpet. When a vacuum goes over them then they are able to survive. What they are not able to survive, however, is hot water which is why steam cleaning is a good addition to vacuuming.

In terms of getting rid of the fleas in your garden, the best thing to do is first of all try to find the areas where there are the most fleas. That's going to be the places where your pet spends the most amount of time. Once you have found them you should sprinkle some Diatomaceous Earth there, as that is a powder insecticide which will kill them all.

If you want to get the very best flea treatment the best thing to do, as always, is to call in the professional. A pest control expert is going to be able to fumigate inside your house and get rid of the growing fleas in that way.

Natural Flea Treatments v Chemical Treatments

When it comes to actually getting rid of the fleas on your pet you are going to have two main options. They are to either use natural treatments or chemical treatments. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

The advantage of using a chemical treatment is that it is going to last a long time, and also that it is easy to apply. So for example it is going to involve something like applying lotion, spraying your pet or even just feeding them a tablet. Whatever you do, it is not only going to kill any fleas that are on your pet but it is also going to kill any that try to latch hold for a period of time afterwards as well.

There is a down side with chemical treatments though which is that sometimes there are negative side effects. For this reason many people choose to only use natural treatments such as a flea bath or using a flea comb. These are good to the extent that they do get rid of all of the fleas that are on your pet. However they don't prevent any fleas after that from getting on your pet again.

It doesn't matter which sort of treatments you use for your pet though, it's still going to be necessary to have your environment treated as well. For that it's best to get in touch with pest control experts.
