Home Care for Seniors

By Jessica Pontel

Senior home care is a service that is common among elderly people. Many of us will at some point be asked to arrange that care for our parents. It is, in essence, a person who comes to the home and assists our loved ones in performing the daily care activities they are no longer capable of performing alone.

Senior home care can involve complex medical care, performed by a nurse or a nurse ssistant, or it can involve someone coming to the house once a week to shop, cook and do some housework. Between those two extremes there is a lot of variability, and you can determine exactly how much assistance is appropriate for your loved one.

The duties of a senior home care provider are also varied. Some senior home care providers are trained medical personnel and can administer medical care when needed. Others are more of companions, doing basic medical care but focusing their energies on assisting with other activities of daily living.

Senior home care is an alternative to placing your parent in a nursing home or other long term care facility. It allows your loved one to spend as many years as possible living independently. For many people, nursing homes are not appealing and therefore, home health care is a viable alternative.

Medicare as well as most insurance plans covers some home health care, depending on the amount of care the patient needs, based on their medical health history. Contacting Medicare or a home health agency is a simple way to determine the level of home health care that will be covered by the insurance.

It might seem difficult to choose a senior home care provider. There are many senior home care providers in this country, and most areas have several options available. You might not know where to begin in selecting a provider.

When making your selection, make sure you choose a provider with the appropriate level of training. If your loved one has no major medical issues, you can choose a person with less medical training, which frequently means they cost less on a per hour basis. However, if your loved one has many severe medical issues, you'll want to hire a trained medical profession to ensure the correct level of support.

The decision to engage a home heath care professional for your parents or other relatives can be a difficult one. You have to consider the needs of the person receiving care, the expense involved, the kind of person who would be best suited to provide care to your loved one and the desires of your family member. It can seem overwhelming, but the peace of mind that comes from knowing your family member is being well cared for makes it all worthwhile.
