Teaching Children About the Way to Conserve Money

By Autumn Lockwood

If you would like to help your child to know how to save their money, then educating them about it early in life is most likely your best bet. How to conserve money and sustain a budget is perhaps one the most important skills you can teach your child, particularly in today's tough economic situation. Fortunately for you, there are many ways that you can help your kid to save money and also keep a budget, and have fun doing it. Here are some easy tips you can use to teach your kid how to save while also having a good time.

Come Up With a Chart Meant for Chores

Most children find it easier to learn about the value of money if they actually earn the money themselves. Although some people don't agree with the practice of giving a kid an allowance in exchange for carrying out chores around the house, it can in fact be a good approach for a kid to learn about finances. You can also designate chores to younger kids which are suitable for their skill level to help them learn responsibility and also help with the household work. You may help make chores more enjoyable for your child by making them a chore chart. Produce a chart that marks daily or maybe weekly house chores, which your kid will be able to mark off when they complete them. You may assign a minor monetary value to every completed chore, or merely give your kid a set allowance for each week that all chores are complete. You will most likely be surprised to learn how fast your child will finish their chores simply for the pleasure of marking them off of the list. If your child is saving money towards a specific goal, such as a toy he or she really wants, displaying a couple of photos in a fun photo frame near the chore chart can help provide a bit of added incentive.

Start a Savings Account Specifically for Your Kid

Your child may also become excited about the idea of saving money if you open up a savings account just for them. There are even some banks which have a certain savings plan designed for kids. Depositing their allowance in a savings account every week can make a kid feel quite "grown-up." Also, by having the money in the bank, they'll be less tempted to waste it on frivolous treats, which makes it a good way to reinforce good savings habits.

Establish a Goal

Although there is a great deal of value in just saving money, you can also teach your kid about budgeting by permitting them to spend a portion of their money on something they truly want. Preferably, it should be something that will require your child to save their money for at least a few weeks. As soon as they have saved all the money they need, you can set aside a special day just to go on an outing and purchase the object, and even let them purchase the item on their own when they get to the checkout. Snap a shot of your child with their brand new item for them to show off in their room in a few cool orange picture frames (or any color they may like). Of course, occasionally your child might save their money working towards a certain goal, only to change their mind and decide to keep saving instead of spending. If your child decides to make this choice, then make sure you commend them for their desire to save and to practice good budgeting.

You will be delighted when you discover just how much fun your kid can have while doing a good job at saving money.
