Ring in the New Year on a Greece Holiday

By Steve Alexander

The New Year is coming round again and if you want to celebrate it in a different way this year, why not join in the exciting celebrations on a Greece holiday and take a last minute break to warmer climes. It may seem a bit unorthodox to travel abroad for New Year's Eve, but Athens is a great place to welcome the New Year in.

On New Year's Day, Greeks exchange gifts as this is the traditional time to give presents instead of Christmas Day. New Year's Eve on holidays in Greece is often spent in the plazas and streets as the adults rush to complete their last minute shopping and clamour to find the best spots for viewing the free concerts put on in the city squares, and the breathtaking firework displays visible from all over Athens.

Running amok among the city, the children spend the night playing pretend war games with plastic "weapons" and whistles. It is jammed with traffic on any other night, with office workers returning home and revellers out for some fun and perhaps a bite to eat.

Traditionally, New Year's Day in Greece is a very lucky day and in order to take advantage of this good luck, Greeks all over the country spend the day playing games in and around their homes and cafes. It can be a bit of a gamble weather-wise taking a break in Athens at this time of year, as you can't be sure whether it will be glorious sunshine or constant raining. One thing for certain is that the temperature will be a lot more pleasant than back home.

You may never have considered leaving the country for New Year but you can't beat a short break to Athens if you want to experience true Greek hospitality and celebrate the coming of a New Year in a new and exciting way.
