When a dealer sells you a new personal registration what they are actually doing is selling the rights for that plate, they don't always actually sell the plates themselves so be careful. This will be a V750 or V778 retention document , these certificates are for one reason, they will prove that you own the right to use the personalised registration on your car.
You will then need to send these documents along with your V5, tax disc and MOT certificate (to prove you are the owner of the car) and a cheque to cover the transfer fee (currently 80) along to the DVLA. They will then update the details on your vehicle driver records. Once this has been done you can then get your plates made up and put them on your car in place of the old ones.
