What to do when your dog is scared

By Jerry Welsh

Sylvester, the Scaredy cat has gained quite a following but not as much as Brutus, the K-9 Air Force hero. These characters have depicted the dog's tough guy personality and the frail and nervous character of the cat. Dogs are considered as the most popular choice for a pet as apart from being wonderful companions, dogs are depended on to provide the human family with protection because of the tough and aggressive personality. This is why it is rather hard to believe that dogs get scared too. If your pet is one with a "scaredy cat" character, what would you do?

Although hard to believe, it is true that tough dogs can get scared too. Shaking, excessive salivation, accelerated heart beat are some of the manifestations of a scared dog. Although potty trained, a nervous dog can have accidents inside the house. Loud sounds like rolling thunder, fireworks display, the ringing of the telephone and even ordinary sounds and situations that are not fearful at all can leave the pet a nervous wreck. Scared dogs have different reactions to situations that trigger nervous attacks. A nervous attack can make the dog destructive. Scared dogs can jump out of windows and do other things that can endanger its life thus a pet owner should not ignore the nervous personality of the pet. It is the responsibility of the owner to find ways to deal with the pet's fear.

The high level of intelligence makes it possible for dogs to understand their human friends. However, it would be beyond their ability to understand if the master explains that the situation or the things that frighten him are not dangerous at all.

Something else must be done to overcome the pet's fears. Dogs are well loved pets and it would be understandable if the pet owner would run to the dog and to soothe the fear with comforting words. The presence, the touch and the voice will comfort the pet - for a while but when the pet is exposed to the same situation it will tremble in fear again. The dog must be helped to realize on its own that the situation is not really dangerous.

This can be done by changing the scary situation with something pleasant. An owner can keep the dog in a room where the sound of the thunderstorm or the firecrackers can be masked by the sound of the stereo. You can close the drapes and provide the dog with a toy. Dogs are food motivated and providing the pet with a treat filled Kong toy will occupy the dog's mind so that the fearful sound will not be noticed.
