The Park
The Olympic Park located in Stratford, England is where the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games will be held. Nine Olympic venues make up the Olympic village and consist of the velodrome, main stadium as well as the Olympic Village and more.
Going the distance
To many people the 2012 Olympics have taken a long time to arrive. To those who have been involved with health and safety it's been like a long distance run finally ending rather than being a sprinter whose race is over in seconds. Health and Safety have been major concerns for the construction of the 2012 Olympic venues since its beginning 5 years ago.
Olympic construction
In 2007 the health and safety began with the Olympic Deliver Authority (ODA). The ODA had a goal of making the construction for the London 2012 Olympic Games the safest construction project possible. It was easily considered one of the biggest construction projects ever. The Olympics construction provided an Olympic sized challenge. Its success depended on detailed planning and a high level of dedication from everyone involved.
A gold medal performance
The Olympic Delivery Authority met all the construction health and safety concerns that came their way. No worker deaths occurred during the construction portion of the project. The work consisted of tens of million of working hours and according to the ODA there were slightly more than a hundred incidents that were reported. The Olympic construction project demonstrated that a high standard for health and safety enables positive things to happen during a very challenging construction.
Lessons Learned
The impressive health and safety performance is one that can be recognized as a tremendous accomplishment. Many of the things learned form the construction project of the 2012 London games are being used by many different companies. New methods of addressing major industry issues such as managing work at height, safety leadership, involving the workforce are lessons that will be available for use by others.
Health and Safety importance
The construction that has taken place for the 2012 Olympic Games at London is being recognized as a large scale project that others can learn from. The ODA head of health and safety is quoted at saying "Managing health and safety well is not a cost. It's an investment."
It's an example that an investment of time spent planning for all health and safety eventualities can bring huge returns.
Knowledge gained
When people think of the London 2012 Olympics it would be great to have it remembered as not only a successful Olympic event but also one that changed the views of health and safety in construction.
