The Ultimate Dog Training Tips You Need To Know

By Stanley Smith

Dog training is beneficial for a household with a canine pet for several reasons. One, it's easier to have friends and family over without the dog barking or jumping. Also, they are less likely to destroy furniture. Read these tips on how to train your dog so you can live together peacefully.

Use your dog's "voice" to help you with the training process. A dog's bark or whine can tell you a lot about their mood and what they want. Paying attention and responding to their signals will help your pet be happier and more successful during training. You may also want to target excessive barking as part of your training program.

If your dog is sick or injured, don't punish it for doing something outside of it's control. If it vomits in the house, that would normally be considered a bad action, but in the case of sickness they may not be able to control it. Instead take your pet to the vet to see if or what is wrong.

When training your dog, you should never punish it for something it did wrong, way after it occurred. If you do not punish your dog immediately after a wrong deed, then you should not punish him at all. The reason is because your dog will be confused and think you are punishing it for doing something else. This is why you must punish your dog while it is in the act of performing the wrong deed or immediately afterwards.

When training, be specific about what you want your dog to do. Using vague commands like "no" tend to be ineffective. No only tells him that you didn't like what he did, but not why. If you say "no" when he jumps on the couch, he may think you wanted him to jump higher. Use specific commands like stay and sit for better results.

When training your dog for specific commands, be sure to use the exact same wording during everyday life as you do during training sessions. If you select "down" for "lie down", use "down" every time you want the dog to lie down. Changing up the terminology can confuse your dog and interfere with training.

If you have an old dog, he may become grouchy and nervous. This is because older dogs often lose their vision, hearing, and/or sense of smell. This can cause them to feel uncertain and vulnerable. Be sure to keep things consistent for your old dog. Set up a comfortable area where he can always count on finding his comfy bed, favorite toy and a dish of food and water.

By following these tips, you are sure to find dog training less overwhelming. As a result, your pet, home property and others, are safer. When you employ training techniques such as those listed here, you will have an easier time training your dog, especially when you practice patience and stay consistent.
