Is It Worthwhile Buying A Tour Of The City While On Holiday

By Angelique Hoffman

A visitor to London will ask themselves many questions in order to make the trip successful. The major issue is the cheap hotel London has on offer, in what locations and which sites one should visit. Many people may even consider, "Is it worth booking a guided tour of the city?".

The latter is dependent on individual taste, but for most large cities it's not essential. Most capitals provide a hop on hop off guided bus tour. You buy a daily or weekend ticket and can jump on and off buses as and when you want to. These are ideal for big cities, limited time or when you are simply overwhelmed by choice. The commentaries are quite interesting and are provided in numerous languages.

However it is always best if at all possible to plan the visit in advance. This ensures that you will get the best from this amazing city. The old school way to do this is to buy a guide book, of which there are many on offer. There is bound to be one that suits your requirements. Some provide itineraries for day trips, based on different activity types such as food, art, culture, churches and shopping. Some comedy travel-writing also gives advice on more unusual places to visit.

In the absence of a guide book, the internet is the modern way to plan a trip with information about festivals, sites, exhibitions and even walking tours. It's always worth visiting the tourist information centre which is normally in central areas of the city, which provide information of all sorts of events and activities in the area.

Not everyone is organized enough to purchase guide books, but with the internet being what it is there is so much information available at your fingertips that you don't really need to plan. Most town centres have a tourist information centre, so when you arrive you can simply ask them for any advice on what to visit.

London can be very expensive but there are many free things to do. Go to South Kensington and tour the free museums including the Victoria and Albert, the Natural History, the Science, and the Geological museums. Each is fun for both children and adults and a good back-up for a wet day. At Tottenham Court Road you'll find the British Museum with the Petrie Museum and Wellcome institute only a short walk away.

There are also hundreds of smaller places to visit (museums, cemeteries, art galleries, public parks) which can be enjoyed for gratis.

If that isn't enough there are hundreds of smaller museums, art galleries, cemeteries, memorials and public parks to be enjoyed, and often for free. If you want to pay then there are other exhibitions and activities such as Madame Tussard's, Buckingham Palace, and St Paul's Cathedral. The list is infinite, so booking a tour will limit your visit to the highlights according to the tour guide and not necessarily to you. So once you have booked your london kings cross hotel is your oyster!
