In the second quarter that ended in September 2011, Lenovo posted a 35.2 percent increase in sales to $7.79 billion from $5.76 in the same quarter last year. The profit attributable to equity holders rose to $144 million or 1.38 cents per share from $77 or 0.76 cents per share for the same quarter in the previous year. On a year-over-year basis, Lenovo's worldwide PC shipments grew by 35.8%.

But then, this is only one part of the story. The other part of the story relates to IBM, the roots of which date back to the 1880s. IBM was formed by merging three companies: the Tabulating Machine Company founded in 1880s, Time Recording Company that was founded in 1900 and Computing Scale Corporation founded in 1901. The credit of merging these companies goes to the financier Charles Flint. The new company thus formed was known as Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation and was incorporated in 1911.

Nonetheless, the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation's stock prospectus of 1911 refers to the Bundy manufacturing Company founded in 1889 as also being part of the merger process.

The product or services manufactured by the company included time keeping systems for employees, weighing scales, coffee grinders, automatic meat slicers and the punched card equipment for the development of the computer. There were 1,300 employees and offices and factories were located in many places in the U.S. Among the merged companies, the Tabulating Machine Company founded by Herman Hollerith specialized in the createment of punched card data processing machines. The createment of the punched cards in 1886 in order to reduce the time and simplify the tabulation of the 1890 Census set the standards for data input for the next 80 years. He also did exemplary work in the 1900 Census, but was faced with the challenge of sustaining the company during non-census years

As it started becoming increasingly difficult to handle the affairs of the company, Flint roped in Thomas J Watson Sr. of Nationwide Cash Register Company who sowed the seed products for the establishment of IBM and its culture as it is seen today. In February 1924, the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation was rechristened as International business Machines Corporation.

IBM introduced a new 80 column rectangular-hole punched card in 1928. With the help of their punched card processing equipment IBM started planning and production calculators in the 1930s. In 1944, IBM partnered with Harvard University to create the Mark 1 computer. This machine computed long calculations automatically for the first time. By the 1950s IBM had started createing its own computers with the introduction of IBM 701 EDPM and started making computers for the U.S. Air Force's automated defense systems. IBM consolidated its mainframe company and expanded its product range with ESA/3909 and S/390.

It was during this time that Don Estridge joined the IBM Entry Systems Division and along with his team acknowledged by the name "Project Chess" produceed the IBM personal computer and released August 1981. The personal computers found their way to the company houses, but common man could not afford these systems for personal use. Around the same time, Microsoft's Bill Gates agreed to create an operating system for the new IBM's new personal computer. The first IBM PC ran on a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 microprocessor. This sparked the computer revolution.

IBM's Personal Computer Division announced its first laptop computer, the PC Convertible, weighing 12 pounds in 1986. The ThinkPad series notebook computer was introduced in 1992. Following the introduction of various new products in desktop as well as laptop series, IBM introduced the ThinkCentre PC line around 2003. The company shipped its 100-millionth personal computer, including desktop and notebook computers, in 2004 prior to being acquired by Lenovo

Currently, Lenovo is a lot of money 500 company focused on personal computers company and has annual sales of more than $21 billion. It is a key supplier of computers in mainland China and the 2nd largest computer maker in the world in terms of volume. The company achieved the distinction of being the world's 2nd largest supplier of personal computers during the third quarter of 2011.
