How To Choose Whether Or Not Homeschooling Is Right For Your Child

By Maria David

The option of home schooling is being accepted more and more in our modern society. This can be for any number of reasons, from wanting to spend more time with your kids to not wanting to expose them to certain influences. As you continue to read, you will see the pros and cons related to home schooling and why so many more parents are choosing this option.

If your child has any type of learning disability or has a physical or emotional challenge, home schooling can be a way to give him or her more personal attention. The public school system, while struggling with large classes and limited resources, it is oftentimes limited in their ability to help students with special needs. Even schools that cater to special needs children are often crowded and each child doesn't get much personal attention. Home schooling gives you the opportunity to give children with special needs an individualized curriculum where they can more easily make progress. Consider that you must be reliable and competent in seeing this through, as it is a full time commitment.

Many financial issues arise when you decide to homeschool your own child. One of the best features of the public school system is that it is actually free. You will have to buy the books, paper, pencils, and everything else associated with learning when you decide to go the homeschooling route. There should be no difficulty with this, especially if your income is consistent. More importantly, at least one parent will have to stay home with the child every day, which means he or she cannot have a full time job. It is essential that the income level of the household be enough to support the family; one parent has to stay at home to do the teaching while the other works.

Public schools have an advantage because of the sheer number of resources available to formal educational programs. The resources available at local school campuses (i.e., buildings with heat and air conditioning, furniture, and even computer technology) is seldom given any consideration by children or adults. Only the financially well-off are likely to be able to offer such luxuries at home for personal use. Generally speaking private homes do not come equipped with science labs, academic libraries, or full-size gymnasiums. Community resources such as libraries and park recreation facilities are available, but it is unlikely that you will find them conveniently located in the same place as you would with a school campus. Definitely a drawback, but don't let this deter you in regard to homeschooling as a possibility.

There are many good reasons to choose home schooling, but it's not right for everyone. Prior to starting a homeschooling program for your child, learn as much as you can about the subject and do your best once you get going. Education for some children, more than ever, is going the way of homeschooling.
