What are the Health Benefits of Holidays?

By Eric Oslethwaite

Taking a break is what a holiday is all about, and that can mean more than just some time away from work or the day to day stresses of home life. There's a lot to be said in terms of your well-being when it comes to going on holiday. Our bodies are mysterious things, and sometimes it's the more subtle things we do in life that can make the difference between feeling good and being a bit under the weather.

Your immune system benefits from rest. A holiday means more than just a bit of time relaxing at home. It gives you a complete break from the day to day, and that means that you're much less likely to be anxious. Stress is something that weakens your immune system, and leaves you open to annoying bugs. Also, sunlight is a great way of strengthening your defences, and making sure you feel better. Vitamin D is synthesised naturally by your body if you get more sunlight, and that means toxins are removed from your body, and you feel happier.

Eating the right things can sometimes be a chore. Working life, or studying, doesn't help in terms of good habit forming, however good your intensions are. But when you're busy enjoying yourself, and in a warm climate, you're much more likely to desire healthier foods that usual. You simply won't feel like stodgy food, or high-fat options, so making the right choice is much easier. In addition, holidays tend to keep you active, whether you're involved in an all-out adventure holiday, or just wandering around and having fun, so your aerobic fitness will get a little boost.

Something that often gets neglected with work life is sleeping enough. Getting away from it all can mean you have the chance for some proper lie ins. Also, we sleep better when we're less anxious, and if you go on a sea-side holiday you might find that you sleep much more deeply due to the increased O-zone around the water's edge.

You're not just getting a good time on holiday: you're also topping up those little things your body needs to stay in shape.
