WETT Installation Requirements

Cast iron and steel have almost identical conductivity ratings and both are suitable for stoves; however, the Insurance Information Institute recommends cast iron. In either case, the thicker the metal, the longer the stove will last.

This pellet-fed stoves are a newcomer on the wood stove scene. They use a processed wood pellet that resembles rabbit food and is fed to the stove's combustion chamber electronically. Pellet stoves have the advantage of having a steady and easily controlled fuel source. The only downside to them is that their electronic controls won't work if the power is out.

Any combustible flooring or floor covering beneath the appliance and/or within the area extending horizontally at least 450 mm (18 in) beyond the appliance on any side equipped with a door, and 200 mm (8 in) beyond the appliance on the other sides, shall be protected by a continuous, durable, noncombustible pad that will provide ember protection thick metal sheet or a grouted ceramic floor-tile surface installed in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada shall be considered a durable pad. A floor pad shall not be placed on top of a carpet unless the pad is structurally supported to prevent displacement and distortion.

The clearance between a solid-fuel-burning appliance and a fuel oil storage tank shall be at least 1.5 m (5 ft). except that the authority having jurisdiction may permit a lesser clearance in accordance with CSA Standard B139.

The minimum clearance between any solid fuel burning appliance and combustible material (other than the floor), whether or not such combustible material is covered with noncombustible material such as plaster, shall conform to Table 2, unless the appliance is certified for lesser clearances.

All the woodburning appliances now on the market have been tested and "certified" or "listed" by one of three recognized testing and certification agencies: the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada (ULC), Warnock Hersey Professional Services Look for one of these logos on the label of a certified appliance
A certified appliance will be labeled as such: a product is not considered certified unless the label is attached. The label and installation manual of a certified appliance contain the clearance information needed for safe installation.
