Basic Dumbo Rat Information

By Tom Parker

Dumbo rats look very similar to the famous baby elephant that we all know from our childhood. They have a trademark look consisting of big, wide ears set low on their flatter-than-average heads. This obviously makes them very adorable.

Dumbo rats are generally larger than their normal pet rat counterparts. Additionally, you'll find that they are a bit friendlier and less aggressive as well. That is not to say that regular rats bite often, but dumbo rats are even more passive, if that's possible.

When breeding dumbo rats, breeders must breed for the specific genes that cause the mutation of larger ears, flatter heads, etc. Over the years, this has caused some controversy, however time and time again it has been shown to be perfectly safe for the rats, resulting in the same quality of life as any other rat breed that you might find in your local pet store, family's home, or anywhere else for that matter.

Some people make a living out of breeding dumbo rats. This is because of a big demand for them as a lot of pet rat owners are partial to dumbo rats. Dumbo rats can come in a variety of colors. For instance, the blue dumbo rat is a crowd favorite. Others prefer more unusual ones like the hairless dumbo rat that has short hair to none at all.

Taking care of dumbo rats does not differ at all from the normal care an owner is expected to give an average fancy rat. Just the same, they also need a dry, balanced diet that consists of lab blocks with rat seed mixes, supplemented with nearly a quarter of vegetables in their diet.

Throughout this short dumbo rat guide, I have touched on some of the special characteristics that make dumbo rats a great option for pet rat owners the world over. Just be sure to give your pet rat plenty of loving care and attention and they will reward you with many hours of wonderful enjoyment!
